Meaning

to serve a sentence or suspension

Key forms

These forms are for εκτίω in the active voice.

TenseFirst-person singular (“I”)
Presentεκτίω
Imperfectεξέτια
Simple past (aorist)εξέτισα
Simple futureθα εκτίσω

How to use the conjugation model

Compare the active column of συνδέω (Conjugation I). The linked table shows that example verb.

Keep the stems and stress shown above for εκτίω. Use the example to compare person endings. A similar pattern does not mean that every alternative or expression in the example applies to this verb.

Used for serving a sentence or suspension: εκτίω ποινή. Present: εκτίω, εκτίεις, εκτίει. Follow the active person endings of συνδέω with this verb’s stems. The past changes εκ- to εξέ-: εξέτια for an ongoing action and εξέτισα for a completed action. Keep εκ- in θα εκτίσω. Do not copy the example verb’s passive forms.

Meaning, example and useful forms

Use εκτίω ποινή for serving a prison sentence or a suspension, including a sporting suspension. This is a formal verb.

Ο παίκτης θα εκτίσει την ποινή του στον επόμενο αγώνα.

The player will serve his suspension in the next match.

Present → simple past → simple future
εκτίω → εξέτισα → θα εκτίσω

The imperfect εξέτια describes serving a sentence over a period of time. The completed past is εξέτισα. Notice εξέ- in these past forms, but εκ- in εκτίσω.
