Meaning

to pay tribute or homage; to render honour or gratitude

Key forms

These forms are for αποτίω in the active voice.

TenseFirst-person singular (“I”)
Presentαποτίω
Imperfectαπέτια
Simple past (aorist)απέτισα
Simple futureθα αποτίσω

How to use the conjugation model

Compare the active column of συνδέω (Conjugation I). The linked table shows that example verb.

Keep the stems and stress shown above for αποτίω. Use the example to compare person endings. A similar pattern does not mean that every alternative or expression in the example applies to this verb.

Usually used in αποτίω φόρο τιμής (pay tribute). Present: αποτίω, αποτίεις, αποτίει. Compare the active endings of συνδέω, keeping αποτι- in the present and αποτισ- for a completed action. The past changes απο- to απέ-: απέτια for an ongoing action, απέτισα for a completed action. The alternative present αποτίνω has the same completed-action forms.

Meaning, example and useful forms

Use this formal verb mainly in αποτίω φόρο τιμής: pay tribute or honour someone. It is different from εκτίω ποινή, which means serve a sentence.

Οι μαθητές απέτισαν φόρο τιμής στον ποιητή.

The pupils paid tribute to the poet.

Present → simple past → simple future
αποτίω → απέτισα → θα αποτίσω

The imperfect is απέτια. Keep αποτι- for an ongoing action and αποτισ- for a completed action. The present variant αποτίνω shares απέτισα and θα αποτίσω.
