Greek verb data & API

For assistants and learning tools

Connect an AI assistant

Give a compatible assistant access to the same recorded verb forms used by our form finder. Add Modern Greek Verbs as a remote MCP server using this address:

https://moderngreekverbs.com/wp-json/mgv-core/v1/mcp

Connection: Streamable HTTP · Authentication: none · Access: public, read-only

Find a verb

search_verbs

Search by Greek lemma, English meaning or entry ID. Try “write” to find γράφω.

Read its forms

get_verb

Retrieve the entry’s listed conjugations, example and usage note, with a link to the reference.

Identify a form

identify_form

Find the verb, tense and person. είναι returns both “is” and “are”.

Once connected, try: “Use Modern Greek Verbs to explain έγραψα and link to the verb.” The connection covers the 100 everyday verbs and their recorded forms. The assistant still needs the surrounding sentence to resolve ambiguity.

Connection details and limits

Use a client that supports remote MCP over Streamable HTTP. It must be configured with the server address; publishing this connection does not connect every assistant automatically. Clients that only support the old HTTP+SSE transport need a compatible upgrade.

The server supports protocol versions 2026-07-28, 2025-11-25, 2025-06-18 and 2025-03-26. Current clients can use server/discover; older clients use the initialize handshake. Responses use JSON. No persistent session or background stream is required.

Requests are limited to 16 KiB, text inputs to 120 characters and traffic to 120 requests per minute per connecting address. On HTTP 429, wait for the Retry-After interval. Search returns up to 20 entries by default; limit accepts 1–100 and offset supports browsing.

Send only the verb or form needed for a lookup. This service retrieves public reference data; it does not generate missing conjugations. Results include source URLs and preserve multiple interpretations.

Prefer ordinary HTTP requests? Use the REST API below and its OpenAPI specification.

Use the same Greek verb reference that powers our form finder in your learning app, research tool or assistant.

The public API provides English meanings, examples, core conjugations and form identification for 100 everyday Greek verbs. Requests are read-only and require no API key.

Three ways to use the reference

List the verbs

GET /entries

Returns the ID, Greek lemma, alternative dictionary forms, English meaning and reference URL for each entry.

View all entries as JSON →

Get one verb

GET /entries/{id}

Returns the listed conjugation paradigms, voice, example sentence and usage note. Use an ID from the collection, such as grafo.

View γράφω as JSON →

Identify a form

GET /lookup?form=…

Returns every recorded interpretation, including the verb, tense, person, number and reference URL. Include particles such as θα or να when present.

Look up έγραψα as JSON →

Base URL: https://moderngreekverbs.com/wp-json/mgv-core/v1

Example: identify έγραψα

The response identifies γράφω, “to write”, in the first-person singular aorist. A match record contains:

{
    "entry_id": "grafo",
    "lemma": "γράφω",
    "form": "έγραψα",
    "tense": "aorist",
    "person": 1,
    "number": "singular",
    "voice": "active",
    "label": "Simple past (aorist)",
    "url": "https://moderngreekverbs.com/grafo/#mgvc-core",
    "match_type": "exact"
}
JavaScript example
const url = new URL('https://moderngreekverbs.com/wp-json/mgv-core/v1/lookup');
url.searchParams.set('form', 'έγραψα');
const response = await fetch(url);
if (!response.ok) throw new Error('Lookup failed');
const result = await response.json();
for (const match of result.matches) {
  console.log(match.lemma, match.label, match.person, match.number, match.url);
}

Read every matching interpretation

  • Keep ambiguity visible. είναι can be “is” or “are”. έκανα can be imperfect or aorist. The surrounding sentence helps determine the intended use.
  • Preserve the returned accents. Search accepts capitals and missing accents. match_type distinguishes an exact match from an accent-insensitive match.
  • Respect particles and aspect. Bare γράψω is a dependent form. θα γράψω is simple future; να γράψω is simple subjunctive.
  • Link to the supporting entry. Use the returned url for a lookup or canonical_url for an entry. These lead to the human-readable reference.

Each tense contains six arrays in person_order: 1sg, 2sg, 3sg, 1pl, 2pl, 3pl. Each array contains the recorded alternative forms for that person. Future strings include θα. Lookup person_index runs from 0 to 5; person is 1, 2 or 3 and number is singular or plural.

Coverage and practical limits

The API currently covers 100 selected everyday verbs: present, imperfect, aorist where available, and future in the listed voice, with selected alternatives. The finder also recognises corresponding dependent forms and forms with να. The wider dictionary contains additional material.

A successful lookup with an empty matches array means that the form is outside this dataset. It does not mean the Greek word is incorrect. Avoid inventing unlisted forms or treating these results as exhaustive.

Send a UTF-8 form of 1–120 characters. Missing or invalid input returns HTTP 400; an unknown entry ID returns HTTP 404. Responses include schema_version and release. Cache results by release where practical, and allow for additional fields in future compatible responses.
